Twitter :)
Monday, January 31, 2011

Here I am again. I'm going to blog about Twitter and how it enhanced my learning during the journey of EIR.

As we all know, Twitter has become more and more popular just like Facebook. Twitter is also like a blog but this is a short version of blog. This is to express your feelings at that moment while blogging, you need to describe what just has happened and you have to update it at home.

Using Twitter in EIR class allows me to get to know them better. In class, we did not talk that much as we were all busy doing our research and using Twitter and following them is an opportunity for me to communicate with them. This is also allows me to know and to share what we have learnt in the class. Twitter is everywhere even I can update it through my phone.

Not all researches can be found in blogspot. Most of the entry are by people who always give opinions about a certain things. In class, I don't seem to find any research on Twitter. But what I know is, both Blogspot and Twitter are use to express feelings and thoughts.

My Dream Holiday : Paris
Sunday, January 16, 2011

I'm back again! Hello! :)

Last few years, I remember watching an Indonesian movie which took place in Paris. I was so amazed by the places there in the movie. They went to popular places of Paris and I fall in love with the Eiffel tower scene where the guy proposed his girl to become his soul mate. It was so touching  that I wish I was the girl. Hehe. From that point of a time, I really dream of going to Paris one day. And that's my "My Dream Holiday: Paris".

Since I'm interested in going to Paris one day, I found a website,<a href="http://www.paris-tourism.com/index.php">Paris Tourism</a> to really know what's the best places, deals etc in Paris.

This website consists of interesting informations about Paris. There are all related about Paris. Though the layout design is as simple, but it is easy to access to the website. There's also tabs for me to know more about Paris such as the interesting places in Paris, hotels, Museum in Paris etc. There's also an advert regarding the hotel's promotion for this month to attract the tourist who visited the website. This website include the hotel search for the user to find which hotel they wanted to search.

When I clicked on one of the link "Paris City Tour" it will directed me to another website with all the tour packages and informations.  It also include the price of each tours so that the tourists can go to the tours beyond their budgets.

When I clicked on the "Popular Places in Paris", it showed me different places in Paris. Since I'm interested in Eiffel Tower, I clicked on to the Eiffel Tower icon to see what's inside.

It then showed me informations and history of Eiffel. I think this is good as I can know more about Eiffel Tower before going there.

Second Life to Paris.....

Reached to the Paris Eiffel Region.

It lead me to the the Eiffel Tower. The place is exactly the same as the real Eiffel Tower.

This is the entrance of the Eiffel Tower. I've decided to visit this tower.

Once I got myself to the elevator, it directed me to the top of the tower with the history of the tower.

I've decided to take view of Paris from the Tower and I get this. :)

I do hope I can go to Paris one day.

Citizen Journalism
Saturday, January 15, 2011

It's time for me to update of what I've learnt on practical 7. This is regarding the Citizen Journalism as well as Stomp.com.

I think Citizen Journalism is a good way for people to share opinions of a certain topics online. This is an interesting thing to either read or reflect of what they see and share it online. Besides watching the news or read on an article, readers can also read opinions from other citizens especially students from their blog or their own domain websites. An advantage of this is that students can interact with the people who have read their blogs and they can comment it based on what they have read. Not only commenting but they can give wonderful feedbacks or suggestions too.

We were assigned to form a group of 5 to 6 to evaluate Stomp.com based on Purpose, Coverage, Authority, Accuracy and Currency. For the first time in EIR lesson, we evaluate Stomp.com as a group. Each of us gave an interesting comments about the website. We just picked the best comment and put it in a table. As usual, different groups have different types of answer when asked by our tutor. It is interesting when come to a group work. :)

Now, I would like to evaluate the website based on Purpose and Currency of the website. In my opinion after browsing and reading Stomp.com, I think that the purpose of this website is to let other people know what have just happened to the surrounding which are not based on the local news on TV as well as a news article. Most of the contents are based on what others have seen and posted it on the website. The currency of the website is always new and updated. You can see it by looking at the date posted and most of the contents are  posted everyday with different kind of news and pictures taken in Singapore or from other countries.

If I were to create my own Stomp based on my topics, "Trends in Spending Habits of Youth", I will make sure that there will be a useful informations and helpline for those who really need it. Maybe, I will add on a quote from other's reference to my website.

I will also ensure that my website will always be updated with current informations based on the reference. I will make sure that every week, I will post on tips on how to spend wisely for the youth. It will include the website or advert on sales so that youth can know where and what is the sale is all about.

Web Databases, Wiki collaboration.
Sunday, January 9, 2011

I'm back again after so long I didn't update my blog. 2 weeks of break and here I am on another mission. :)

First of all, I don't think invisible web (databases) is an effective search tool because it is not that easy to search for the topic that I wanted to search. However, the interface of the website is quite good because it show how relevant the website is. It is also show what type of file they store for us to download. It is either HTML or PDF file. This is useful for me to download and to see the relevancies of the webpages.

Yes. I will use the invisible web (database) for my respective diploma as most of the webpages are from the TP and it is easier for me to search for the related topics that I wanted to search. I believe that the previous batch of students have used the database for their research. Therefore, it will useful for me to use the invisible website for my respective Diploma.

Let's proceed on to the Wiki's collaboration. I find it is an interesting as lots of people can share their research and post it on the wiki. This is to let other people including me to learn more about a certain topic which are open for a discussion. I just posted my own research regarding the youth of spending habits of youth and I hope, I'll get a reply soon!

Recently, I managed to view Donovan's blog and I think, this is the best blog ever because he keep updated with his own opinion and reflection regarding the practical. I find it interesting and all the opinion are different from me. Also, his blog is well manage and it's organized.

Aww. That's all from me for this week practical. I hope you people will enjoy! :) See you guys with more updates.

Google vs Google Scholar
Sunday, November 28, 2010

Hello! I'm back. Back to do week 3 reflections blog regarding Google and Google Scholar. Our tasked was to compare the effectiveness of the search engine of Google and Google Scholar. Let's compare. =)

Google

Google allows user to preview the page before clicking on to the button. By previewing the page, the user will somehow know what's inside the webpages.

Another unique features on Google is that, it has functions which allows users to change the location of Singapore, the standard result of the page as well as the timing of the website.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar on the other hands, have an extra features which allows users to choose what types of websites they wanted to read. There are also citation features and at least summaries features too.

Another features which is Advanced Scholar Search. This allows user to search the articles by typing out the author name, publication, date, collections such as legal patent and journals.

Overall, I'm impressed with Google search engine. Because it is much more accurate and relevant compared to Google Scholar. Google Scholar doesn't meet any of my research requirement and it's kind of complicated to use. The date of the Google and Google Scholar is different. Google are much more up-to-date while the Google Scholar are quite outdated.

Discussion Forum.

The next tasked we must do is that, we must participate in discussion forum. I've decided to respond on to the forum regarding the topic of "Youth Living In the High Life".

 From the website, http://reach.gov.sg

I feel by participating in a discussion forum help me to do my research regarding about my topics. Before I started to type in my thoughts, I feel a bit anxious and worry that what I think and type might be totally wrong even if it's just my own opinion. In the forum discussion, there's Dr who also contributed in thee forum.

Citation and Bibliography.

Why must we do citation and bibliography? Well, for me, I think that, it is important to do citation and bibliography as to prevent plagiarism. This is to acknowledge the authors who have done their work. It is simply rude to not cite the work they have done. Also, it can be use as reference for other to read and track back the website. It is really important and it a must-do-thing to cite the reference that we have search for.

Stay tuned for another entry. =)

Virtual Shopping
Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Hello! I'm back again. It's Hari Raya Haji today and wishing all the muslims people Selamat Hari Raya Haji! No school today but we got task to do on the Second Life. I swear to god, that I'm so noob about Second Life. Haha. But not to worry, I manage to play that. =)

My task now is to explore the Second Life shopping area. So, I choose Roosa to explore. Basically the products are more on clothings and fashion such as skirts, T-Shirt,leggings, etc.

This is where they sell T-shirts and some other clothing for the youths especially.

The next store I explored is all about the baseball cap. But the cool thing is that the product are all in an online catalog. When I wanted to check the price of the cap, it will direct me to a notes contain the description of the baseball cap.

The look of the shop is kind of cool and it really met my taste. It is more to teenagers style and it same goes to the songs inside the store. I feel that it is easy to shop there because they placed the product neatly and it is easy to find what clothes I wanted to buy.

It is easy to move around however the speed of access is too slow for me. The help facilities is useful for me and it helped me a lot during the activities. I didn't meet anyone tho.

The experience I've learnt from this virtual shopping compared to the E-Shopping Spree is that there are more choices of things I wanted to purchase compared to the online shop. But good thing about the E-Shopping Spree is that, they provide us with the product's descriptions and reviews from other buyers compared to virtual shopping they did not provide any descriptions at all. This is difficult for me to know which one is a good quality products etc. It is important to have a product's descriptions and reviews as virtual shopping doesn't have any one to ask to.

For this, I learnt how to explore and to shop on the Second Life even though there's no money involve. Also, I know how to pick items from the shop itself and also using the help facilities they provide for us. The most challenging part is that, I cannot buy the items as there's an error when I click on the Buy icon as shown in the print screen picture below.

On top of that, it's fun exploring the Second Life. Till then, I'm out for now. Goodnight! =)

2nd Week of EIR
Saturday, November 6, 2010

This week I had to choose discussion on the trends of youth spending habits which is number 11. Initially, this is not the topic I wanted to choose but since someone have taken the other topics I quickly choose this topic. After all, it's not that bad because this topic about youth spending a lot is so common in Singapore. It is really a trend in Singapore for youth to spend quite a lum sum of money just for branded stuffs. Upon choosing the topics, we were asked to search our topic using the 4 given category. They are, organizational website, e-Magazine/journal, blog and discussion forum.

Each of them have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Let's take a look at the organizational websites. I think this website can be trusted as the informations given are mostly the facts. It is maintained by a particular organization and they would usually get the facts from other sources as well. The website also will include pictures and some other websites related to the particular topics. I think, organizational websites is the best in terms of finding the informations.

Let's move on for the e-Magazine/Journal websites. This website are based on the news and the contents are mostly quote from local or international newspapers and it can be generic. However, it is hard to understand the way they interpret it and only certain people such as the business man will surf this website more as to update themselves with news around the world especially the business's news.

Next is the blog website. Blog. Who doesn't know what is blog is. It's just an opinion of one party. It is not that fact like organizational website but sometimes, their opinions are based on what they read or get from the other sources. Their informations are sometimes inaccurate and cannot be trusted also.

The last category is the discussion forum. Most of the content in discussion forum are mostly opinions and suggestions. The people will contribute ideas and opinions of any topics that was posted on the forum. However, it is difficult to research of some topics as some opinions are simply untrue and biased.

This is it. 2 entries per day. Till we meet again next week of EIR. =) See you!
